Andrena Sawyer is an author, business strategist, and diversity advocate whose background includes surviving the civil war in Sierra Leone. Her authenticity and battle-tested principles inspire audiences to embrace their past, own their present and maximize their future.
Originally from Freetown, Sierra Leone, she and her family moved to the United States when she was nine years old due to a civil war that left thousands dead and untold numbers maimed and displaced. She now credits her family's move during the war for her interest in human triumph and perseverance. She has since actively worked to mobilize and empower others.
At age 15, she founded Triple “T” MAD (Teens Trying to Make a Difference), a community service organization for teens in central New Jersey. As a student at Howard University, she continued to cultivate her interest in community development by founding Rock, the MIC—an annual outreach for youth in the DC area. These experiences laid a firm foundation that continues to define her work.She is the President of P.E.R.K. Consulting, an advisory firm for small to mid-sized nonprofits and businesses, and the Founder of MCWEN—a faith-based network for women of color entrepreneurs.
Through her work, she has helped hundreds of organizations and thousands of individuals move from ideas to purpose-driven work.
She is also the author of several book, including “The Misadventures of a New Entrepreneur: 5 Things They Won’t Teach You in Business School.”

I’m intrigued by your book title, “The Misadventures Of A New Entrepreneur: 5 Things They Won't Teach You in Business School.” Can you share a bit about your book with us? Your book, is at available on Amazon? Andrena, this has been so interesting. If someone wanted to reach out to you, to ask a question or possibly do an interview such as this, how can they do that? How can someone get in touch with you?Folks, I can’t emphasize enough how important it is for you to “be your own boss.” Even if you are working for another company, or even if you are a Federal employee and think you have a guaranteed job. All it takes is for someone higher up to say, “We are reshaping the company,” or “Your job has been eliminated.” Then, you’re job is gone.
I know, I’ve had that happen to me. It’s not a good position to be in.
But, with Andrena’s help, you could start your side job and have that soon become you main job. Then, you are the one who’s in charge. If you start now, you could be in a position where you may just decide to quit or retire early from your “regular job.” How awesome would that be?
