Leading a Productive Life with Disabilities – Joey Wells

 

Joey Wells was born with Muscular Dystrophy.  He was not expected to live more than about age 1 or 2. But he has defied the odds and over 30 years later, he is an inspiration to others through the way he lives his life, his activities and through a couple of books he has written, called “Through My Eyes”  and “Momma Gave Birth to Greatness.” He is an avid soccer fan – specializing at “Power Soccer.”

Folks, help me welcome to the program, Joey Wells. Joey, thank you coming on the program today!

Ok, the first question I always ask every guest is this. In your own words, other than that short bio I read, tell us, “Who is Joey Wells.”

Now, I want to start at the beginning. Let’s talk about your childhood.  How has Muscular Dystrophy affect your childhood?

I know I had a friend back in Texas who had MS named Tony. Tony ended up working in my office as an admin and he would be bold in his ability to inform people who thought he was mentally weak when, in fact, it was a muscle issue not a mental issue. How have you conquered those situations when people want to treat you differently like that?

Tell us some of the places you have lived.

Tell us about your business you started.

And you have spent a lot of time in I.C.U. as well. You say that the time in ICU is where you really learned to observe people and read their body language. How did that change you and how you react to others?

What was your biggest challenge growing up, both physically, Spiritually and emotionally?

Tell us about Power Soccer. How did you get involved with that and what has it meant to you?

And you’ve won, if I’m not mistaken, 7 MVP awards for Power Soccer, is that right?

What else is your passion? Something that you devote a lot of time to?

Let’s shift to your book, “Through My Eyes.”  How long did it take you to write that book?

Why did you write it? What was your purpose for writing the book?  “Momma Gave Birth to Greatness.” How long did it take you to write that book?

Do you have other writing projects you’ve been working on?

“Through My Eyes” is mainly poetry.

“Momma Gave Birth to Greatness” is the story of Joey’s life.

Is your book “Through My Eyes” is available on his website only until it is republished as an updated book on Amazon.

Joey, I appreciate you taking the time to join us today. I know you have a lot going on and I just wanted to say that I know you are inspiring an entire generation of people out there. I know there are some that just want to make excuses for their disabilities while you are showing them they can be an example and not an excuse.

I cannot answer the question of “WHY” God had you born this way. But I can say that God knew you would be strong enough to be an example to others.  And you have shown us that is the case. I wish you the best and pray for your continued blessings.  Thank you again for coming on the program today.
