Prayed Upon: Breaking Free from Therapist Abuse

Amy Nordhues pt 2

There are some people that choose a career in healthcare, mental care, public service – all because they want to help those in need. There are those that do so because they believe it will provide for a secure financial future for them and their families. There is nothing wrong with those motives. Nothing at all. In fact, if you can be of service to others and help to secure your financial future, that almost secures your career motives from the start. But there are some who enter these fields for nefarious reasons. Maybe their good intentions were the initial factors for choosing that type of career. But, somewhere along the way, they realize that, for whatever reason, they can, let’s say, “Get more of (you fill in the blank).” In some cases, this selfish motivation soon becomes their focus. It soon becomes a dark side that they “groom and prey upon” their victims. Manipulating them into providing whatever it is  they crave and all the while encouraging them to remain silent about the activities. In some cases – or most cases, even to accept the responsibility for what has happened. This becomes even more tragic, when these events happen at the intersection of power, vulnerability and religion.  Yes, religion. My guest today, Amy Nordhues, is a survivor of this type of circumstances. Amy Nordhues is a survivor of both childhood sexual abuse and sexual abuse as an adult at the hands of a mental health professional. She is a passionate Christ-follower and expert on the healing God provides. She has a BA in Psychology with minors in Sociology and Criminology. Her latest book is, “Prayed Upon: Breaking Free from Therapist Abuse” and won first place in the Inspire Christian Writer's "Great Openings" contest for non-fiction.
This person was a respected elder in the church. Did the pastor address the issue publicly in church? Or the did he allow the doctor to just “go away?”
You initially wanted to press criminal charges but was advised against it. Why?
How prevalent is this type of abuse among professional therapists, counselors, etc.?  Are there any statistics on this?
When your friend reported all of this to the medical board, how long from that time until you attended his license forfeiture hearing?
Was he allowed to continue practicing and seeing other patients that entire year?
Amy, I want to thank you for sharing all of this information with us, through your book and all that you are doing to expose this evil that is among us.
Other than your book, “Prayed Upon,” are you doing any other work, talks, etc. to help others that have faced the same situations you went through?
And your book, “Prayed Upon,” is available in Kindle format on Amazon, correct?  Any print versions released or coming out soon?
And if someone wanted to get in touch with you, to ask a question or maybe to do an interview such as this. How can they do that? How can they get in touch with you?
I’ll put links to all of this down in the show notes.
Folks, unfortunately, in the fallen world in which we live, things like this, like what Amy went through – occur more frequently than we know or would like to admit. I encourage you to order Amy’s book “Prayed Upon: Breaking Free from Therapist Abuse.”  I would like to recommend you purchase two or three copies – or more!  Or share them with others.
I’m sure you know of someone or have heard of someone that may have or may be going through, some similar type of abuse. Sow this into their life. You never know how it may help them. And give one copy to your pastor. This one book may open their spiritual eyes to situations in their church so, with the Holy Spirit’s help, they can identify and put a stop to this type of activity.
Praise God for Amy’s pastor who took immediate action when he found out what was happening.  This gave Amy the strength to take the next step. And that is all you can do – ONE STEP AT A TIME.
One day at a time. One hour at a time, if that is all you can focus on.
Amy, thank you for coming on the program and sharing your story with us. I cannot imagine how hard it is for you to confront this over and over – but going through it just so you can help someone somewhere escape this type of activity themselves.  Thank you for sharing today.

About your host

Profile picture for Robert Thibodeau

Robert Thibodeau

I am a 12 year Army veteran as both enlisted and as a commissioned Cavalry Officer.
I am now a retired law enforcement supervisor...

I had my own business for seven years before I entered law enforcement.

As a cop, I was injured on the job on May 12, 2007 and after several surgeries over a couple of years, forced to retire in 2011.

As I was looking down the road to “what am I going to do next?” I started what is now known as a podcast (I had no clue at the time).

Within six months of starting (what I called) “My online radio program” I was offered an opportunity to be on nationwide AM radio. I learned A LOT in one year of doing that!

I then started the online Christian radio platform "Evangelism Radio" in the fall of 2010. It has had listeners in 160+ nations and all 50 states. We host 50+ Christian broadcasters on a weekly basis. We have been operating 24/7 for almost 14 years now. We have been rated #1 in the world by Shoutcast. com on several occasions in our genre. We recently transferred ownership of Evangelism Radio to another ministry so I could concentrate full time on podcasting, preaching and writing.

In 2018, I started the Kingdom Cross Roads Podcast to conduct interviews with Christian influencers from all walks of life and to play their interviews on the radio station. (The KCR Podcast has its own time slot on Evangelism Radio)!
We now have over 1600 episodes and almost 1100 interviews (in just over 6 years).

Looking out at the future of online Christian media, I noticed there was no viable platforms that catered only to the Christian podcast market.

In 2023, we launched a networking platform called, "FaithCasters" which connects "Great Christian podcasters with Great Christian Guests!" This helps to promote the work you do through podcast interviews! Check it out at https://FaithCaster.org

We recently launched "FaithCaster Academy" which serves as a training hub for ALL of our trainings (podcast training / speaker training / interview training, etc.). Members receive access to ALL of our training programs for one low, monthly membership fee. Members also receive FREE access to ALL of the LIVE trainings I conduct (1 or 2 per month) - while non-members have to pay to access the live trainings.

Between my podcast training program, conducting podcast interviews, appearing on other podcasts as guests, speaking at conferences (in person and virtually) and the podcast networking platform, I guess you could say “I’m all in” when it comes to podcasting and online media!

My total focus is to do all we can to assist you to “Get The Word Out” about your mission, services, products, ministry, books, business, etc.
